This scene of Londons Trafalgar Square is one of several images that Blake created at this time for the British Railways. A painter in oils and watercolor and a London resident himself, Blake focuses on visitors enjoying the spots twin lion statues and resident pigeons, with the National Gallery and the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in the background. What you cant see may well be the squares most notable landmark; Nelsons Column, erected to the lord admiral after the Battle of Trafalgar. From friendly bobbies to charming children the crowd is well-observed, but the major appeal of this mid-summer cityscape lies in its expert handling of composition.
