During the summer of 1909, the Munich Exhibition Park featured ?Japan and East Asia in Art,? and this poster advertises it. Graf studied at the Munich Academy, then started to work in applied graphics in 1901. From 1919 on, he concentrated on teaching at the Technical High School in Munich. In this poster, he gave the samurai a fierce scowl seen in many Japanese woodcuts, and used a single bright color, yellow, as a contrast to the somber greys, blues and black of the design.
