The golden sun of an autumn afternoon washes over the Hudson River valley, host to the New York Central Lines and inspiration for the railroad's descriptive sobriquet, 'The Water Level Route' Upwards of sixty luxurious passenger trains a day polished the rails of this well-manicured mainline between New York and Albany. This 'Great Steel Flat' coddled its patrons in leather and mahogany, offering fine meal service in well-appointed dining coaches and restful sleep in hushed Pullmans. In the foreground, the extra-fare 'Knickerbocker Special' from St. Louis flies past on its way to Grand Central Terminal, while a faint wisp of steam trails a fast, northbound freight deep in the purple shadow of Storm King Mountain across the water. A glorious day to be riding on the rails!
