The period between the two World Wars was the hey-day of luxury cruising.  During these years, Canadian Pacific operated more than 350 cruises to the West Indies, The Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, Scandinavia and around the world.  And the crown jewel of their fleet was undoubtedly the Empress of Britain.  To compete with such majestic ships as the Cunard Lines Aquitania, the French Lines Ile de France and the United States Lines Leviathan, Canadian Pacific Steamships launched the 45,000-ton Empress of Britain in 1930, the second ship to bear the name.  A somewhat bulky looking three-funneled vessel, claimed by some of its admirers to be the most luxuriously-appointed ship to have ever sailed, it was the largest ship operated by the Canadian Pacific and proudly took its place as the flagship of the fleet.  Beck sets the Empress assail beneath a globetrotters fantasy frieze of exotically colored travel vignettes. In this anonymous piece, the oversize image dwarfs Neptune's golden chariot flying under its bow, with only the sunset sky capable of approaching her grandeur.
