Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was incorporated on February 16, 1881. Less than five years later a ribbon of steel united Canada when the line to the Pacific coast was completed with the driving of the 'Last Spike' at Craigellachie, British Columbia, on November 7, 1885. By the 1920s, CPR had become known as the 'World's Greatest Travel System'. That slogan helped CPR promote its renowned transcontinental passenger trains, a chain of luxury hotels and a fleet of steamships. Since its beginnings, CPR commissioned many well-known artists and even went so far as to build an in-house team of graphic artists and printers to illustrate the company's vast empire. As a result, Canadian Pacific made a significant contribution to the art of poster design. Today, CPR operates on about 14,000 miles of rail lines in Canada and the United States and is among the largest freight railways in North America.
